Manufacturing hydrogen and borohydride. Reduction of aldehydes and ketones. Rubber foaming agent. Removal of trace aldehydes, ketones, and peroxides in organic compounds.
White crystalline powder. It has hygroscopicity, decomposes in humid air, and is stable in dry air at 300 ℃. Slowly heat to 400 ℃ for decomposition, and rapidly heat to 500 ℃ for decomposition. Solubility (g/100g): 55 in water at 25 ℃, 88.5 at 60 ℃, 104 in liquid ammonia at 25 ℃, 22 in ethylenediamine at 75 ℃, 1.4 in morpholine at 25 ℃, 3.1 in pyridine at 25 ℃, 16.4 in methanol at 20 ℃ (reaction initiated), 4.0 in ethanol at 20 ℃ (slow reaction), 0.1 in tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol at 20 ℃, 5.5 in diethylene glycol dimethyl ether at 25 ℃, and 18.0 in dimethylformamide at 20 ℃. When the aqueous solution contains a small amount of sodium hydroxide, it is quite stable and can be stored for several days. The aqueous solution rapidly decomposes when boiled.
